The main north-south road between London and Arundel went via Broomer's Hill Lane, Wickford Bridge (Wicca's Ford) Wiggonholt, Rackham Street, Rackham Bank and North Stoke ford to Arundel. Stane Street was a drove road to Wealden pastures and a cul-de-sac as there was no Pulborough bridge. The east-west road between Winchester and Shoreham crossed the Arun at Stopham via a ford across the narrowest floodplain, and Coombelands Lane / Church Place / Rectory Lane. Was the castle at Park Mount built to protect this crossing over an important river? St Mary's Church and a village developed around the crossroads.
