Map of late medieval Pulborough

The east-west highway through Pulborough moved southward to what is now Stopham Road and Lower Street after the first Stopham Bridge was built circa 1309, replacing fords and ferries. New village centres develop at the junction of roads now called Swan Corner and further east on Pott Street and Lower Street, south of Pott Common.
